I readdress the issue whether the topological charge of the gauge background has an influence on a hadronic observable. To this end pion correlators in the Schwinger model with 2 dynamical flavours are determined on subensembles with a fixed topological charge. It turns out that the answer depends on a specific function of the sea-quark mass and the box volume which is in close analogy to the Leutwyler-Smilga parameter in full QCD.

Some key points out of my recent study of the characteristic features of the small ($x \ll 1$), intermediate ($x \simeq 1$) and large ($x \gg 1$) Leutwyler-Smilga regimes for QCD-type theories in a finite volume ($x = V \Sigma m$) are presented, and a few immediate consequences for full QCD simulations are discussed.

I present a selection of CP-PACS and UKQCD data for the pseudo-Goldstone masses in $N_f=2$ QCD with doubly degenerate quarks. At least the more chiral points should be consistent with Chiral Perturbation Theory for the latter to be useful in an extrapolation to physical masses. I find consistency with the chiral prediction but no striking evidence for chiral logs. Nonetheless, the consistency guarantees that the original estimate, by Gasser and Leutwyler, of the $N_f=2$ QCD low-energy scale...

Recent progress in Lattice QCD is highlighted. After a brief introduction to the methodology of lattice computations the presentation focuses on three main topics: Hadron Spectroscopy, Hadron Structure and Lattice Flavor Physics. In each case a summary of recent computations of selected quantities is provided.

The quark-mass dependence of the eta in the Schwinger model, which -- like the eta-prime in QCD -- becomes massive through the axial anomaly, is studied on the lattice with N_f=0,1,2. Staggered quarks are used, with a rooted determinant for N_f=1. In the chiral limit the Schwinger mass is reproduced, which suggests that the anomaly is being treated correctly.

The eigenvalue spectra of staggered fermions with an Adams and/or Hoelbling mass term are studied. The chiralities of the eigenmodes reflect whether the chirality linked to the unflavored approximate (\gamma_5 \times 1) or the flavored exact (\gamma_5 \times \xi_5) staggered symmetry is considered, and which one of the RR, LR, RL, LL eigenmode definitions is used. In either case a sensitivity to the topological charge of the gauge background is found. We discuss how to remove the leading...

A Lie-algebra based recipe for smoothing gauge links in lattice field theory is presented, building on the matrix logarithm. With or without hypercubic nesting, this LOG/HYL smearing yields fat links which are differentiable w.r.t. the original ones. This is essential for defining UV-filtered ("fat link") fermion actions which may be simulated with a HMC-type algorithm. The effect of this smearing on the distribution of plaquettes and on the residual mass of tree-level O(a)-improved...

Recent lattice data from CP-PACS, UKQCD, SESAM/TXL and the Pisa group regarding the quark mass dependence of the topological susceptibility in 2-flavour QCD are compared to each other and to theoretical expectations. The latter get specified by referring to the QCD finite-volume partition function with ``granularity'' which accounts for the entropy brought by instantons and anti-instantons. The chiral condensate in $N_f=2$ QCD, if determined by this method, turns out surprisingly large.

I give a sketch of my recent attempt to test the prediction by Leutwyler and Smilga according to which, for QCD in a finite box with $N_{f} \geq 2$, the combination $x = V \Sigma m$ indicates whether the net topological charge of the gauge background proves relevant ($x \ll 1$) or irrelevant ($x \gg 1$) for physical observables.

A summary is given of a quantization of the multiflavour Schwinger model on a finite-temperature cylinder with chirality-breaking boundary conditions at its spatial ends, and it is shown that the analytic expression for the chiral condensate implies that the theory exhibits a second order phase transition with $T_c = 0$.

The concept of simulating a variant of QCD with sea quarks which interact with the gluon configuration only via global gluonic quantities like $\int F\tilde F dx$ and $\int FF dx$ is tested for the case of the massive 2-flavour Schwinger model. It is found to amount to an importance sampling method which generates -at essentially the costs of a quenched run- an ensemble in between a full and a quenched one, thus providing a competitive alternative to the quenched approximation.

I give a quick summary of my proposal for simulating an improvement on quenched QCD with dynamical fermions which interact with the gluon configuration only via the topological index of the latter. It amounts to include only the topological part of the functional determinant into the measure, thereby absorbing a correction factor into the observable. I discuss the prospects of this concept from a study in the massive $N_f$-flavour Schwinger model, where the correction factor is indeed found to...

The legality of the "rooting trick" in dynamical staggered fermion simulations is discussed, i.e. whether the theory with the Boltzmann weight $\det^{1/4}(D_\mathrm{st})$ yields the right continuum limit. Since the problem is unsolved, pieces of evidence in favor and against are collected and examined.

Given the increasing availability of lattice data for (unquenched) QCD with $N_f=2$, it is worth while to check whether the generated vacuum significantly deviates from the quenched one. I discuss a specific attempt to do this on the basis of topological susceptibility data gained at various sea-quark masses, since for this observable detailed predictions are available. The upshot is that either discretization effects in dynamical simulations are still untolerably large or the vacuum structure...

We consider the N_f-flavour Schwinger Model on a thermal cylinder of circumference $\beta=1/T$ and of finite spatial length $L$. On the boundaries $x^1=0$ and $x^1=L$ the fields are subject to an element of a one-dimensional class of bag-inspired boundary conditions which depend on a real parameter $\theta$ and break the axial flavour symmetry. For the cases $N_f=1$ and $N_f=2$ all integrals can be performed analytically. While general theorems do not allow for a nonzero critical temperature,...

The effect of repeatedly smearing SU(3) gauge configurations is investigated. Six gauge actions (Wilson, Symanzik, Iwasaki, DBW2, Beinlich-Karsch-Laermann, Langfeld; combined with a direct SU(3)-overrelaxation step) and three smearings (APE, HYP, EXP) are compared. The impact on large Wilson loops is monitored, confirming the signal-to-noise prediction by Lepage. The fat-link definition of the ``naive'' topological charge proves most useful on improved action ensembles.

A proposal is presented for simulating an improvement on quenched QCD with dynamical fermions which interact with the gluon configuration only via the topological index of the latter. Strengths and shortcomings of the method are discussed and it is argued that the approximation - though being crude - shares some qualitative aspects of full QCD which relate to the issue of chiral symmetry breaking.

I give an outline of my proposal to take the QCD functional determinant in lattice simulations partially into account: The determinant is split into two factors, the factor referring to a standard background in each topological sector is kept exactly, the factor describing the effect of the smooth deviation of the actual configuration from the reference background is replaced by one. The issue of how to choose the reference configurations is discussed and it is argued that ``topologically...

The Leutwyler-Smilga prediction regarding the (ir)relevance of the global topological charge for QCD in a finite box is subject to a test. To this end the lattice version of a suitably chosen analogue (massive 2-flavour Schwinger model) is analyzed in the small ($V\Sigma m \ll 1$), intermediate ($V\Sigma m \simeq 1$) and large ($V\Sigma m \gg 1$) Leutwyler-Smilga regimes. The predictions for the small and large regimes are confirmed and illustrated. New results about the role of the functional...
